Patient Engagement

A change of plan - we need your support

In response to our patient engagement letter dated December 2016, we have received lots of written and verbal feedback and concerns from our patients regarding patient access and continuity of care if we were to merge with Pembroke House Surgery in June 2017.

The main concerns are that our patients want our assurance they will be able to continue to see their own Doctor & many are concerned about the ease and flexibility in booking appointments to see their preferred doctor and another concern was to remain in this building and/or keep closer to the town centre.

In response to your concerns and in an effort to keep our Doctors and patients together we have now changed our plans and will be moving to Corner Place Surgery which is located in the town centre, with a view to a merger.  We feel our move will be made a little easier for our patients because Corner Place Surgery have a similar appointment system to ours and their location is central to the town. There are bound to be significant changes for doctors, staff & patients during this transition, but we feel sure this is a positive move & hope that you will bear with us as we go through this challenging period of change.

Addressing your main concerns:

Can we stay in the current building?

As we have previously advised you, the Withycombe Lodge building is being sold for commercial redevelopment by our landlord and we need to vacate the building by 23rd June 2017 at the end of our current Lease.  This means that the Practice needs to relocate to another site before 23rd June 2017 and we absolutely cannot stay in our current building, we have to relocate.

Can we still book appointments when we want?

Corner Place Surgery have a similar traditional appointment system to our own, you will be able to book appointments for either on the day or up to 2 weeks in advance.

Can we still see our own GP?

Corner Place Surgery also have personalised GP lists that will enable patients to see their doctor of choice WHENEVER POSSIBLE. Therefore we feel that those of you who desperately want to continue to see the same doctor will be happier and feel more assured regarding continuity of care.

Can we stay as close to the town centre as possible so we don’t have to get another bus?

The revised relocation is as central as we can get, close to the library, the bus station and the public car parks.

Both Withycombe Lodge and Corner Place Practices think that the merger will mean:

ü A flexible booking system allowing patients to book on the day or up to 2 weeks in advance

ü Personalised GP lists at the same time with a wider range of choice

ü  Access to a wider range of experienced male & female GP’s

ü  Central location, close to bus station and public car parks

ü Increased access to additional services (e.g. contraceptive services)

ü  Improved quality of services delivered by  multi-skilled teams of GP’s, Nurse Practitioners, Practice Nurses & Pharmacists

Shingles vaccine to be routine for people in their 70s

People in their 70s across the UK will be offered a vaccine against shingles from this September. Experts have been recommending routine immunisation against the disease, which causes a painful rash, some patients can experience prolonged pain for many years.

The government-led programme will target 70 (2.9.43-1.9.44), 78 (2.9.35-1.9.36) and 79-year-olds (2.9.34 - 1.9.35) in the first instance and should prevent tens of thousands of cases a year. Elderly people are at greatest risk, the vaccination should prevent nearly half of cases in the over-70s.

It is estimated that, in England alone, around 800,000 people will be eligible to receive it in the first year.

Shingles can be a nasty disease for older people and can lead to long-term health problems for around 14,000 people each year. This new vaccine can prevent some of the most serious cases, giving people the chance to live without the discomfort and pain that shingles causes.
